My family's new MVP insurance cards came in the mail today!

I did not get one

I called MVP. I punched in the toll-free number (it's 1.888.687.6277, by the way, since MVP does not make their member services number available on their Web site), my member number, and my eight-digit date of birth. MVP said sorry, I don't exist. THEN HOW DO I HAVE A MEMBER NUMBER

TXF - Syzygy. No concept of this

ETA: My mother is the policy holder; she called MVP today and sorted it all out. I should exist within 24 hours.

" 'You're so pretty, you're so beautiful, gorgeous, lovelyyy.' Blah blah blah. Okay, so you're not blind."

"I would most like to walk down the runway to 'My Prerogative' by Britney Spears."

Backstage - It's exhausting being this fabulous

How can anyone hate her

Did anyone read Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain? (Unavailable? Download as PDF, EPUB, or MOBI.) ed_ucate just had an opinion post about it. I'm going to reread it, but I gave my initial thoughts. The OP mentioned the few technical errors, which we agreed gave the book a familiar feeling. The rest of my comment:

When I heard she was publishing an ED memoir, I was psyched: do you know of any others by lesbians? EDs in women are so often incorrectly and dangerously assumed to be a desire for male attention, and experiencing homophobia can play into self-destructive behaviors and mental illnesses, and I was really excited to read her takes on those issues. And she did mention it frequently, but the book fell kind of … flat. People with limited knowledge of eating disorders may get more out of it. There were moments when I laughed—early on when she was out, her mother(? I should be fact-checking) warned her against being "too" out, and she said something to the effect of "At least I'm not dating Ellen DeGeneres." But like I said, it was underwhelming for me, although I have heard lots of positive reviews from eating-disordered folk. I guess it's different strokes.

Oh—the photos of her around her lowest weight that were sandwiched in the middle of the book were completely unnecessary.

This is the review that was linked in the post.

Your thoughts on the book?

From Portia's appearance on _Ellen_. Portia - I don't think that I'm perfect at all. Ellen - I do.

I've been sick all week. I hoped I would be better by tonight—Dana called and asked if I'd want to go out to a bar/club? I use club loosely here—but I woke up unable to breathe. I wanted a hot toddy, but there's no hard liquor in the house. I made black tea with lemon and honey and made believe. I could breathe again, but I felt shitty about staying in.

And then Dana and Raphael came by with rum, and I was like, New Year's Eve miracle? You betcha, New Year's Eve miracle.

And then I almost killed him with eggplant.

Wishing everyone a tolerable at the very least and rewarding

So the "Monster" video was even more misogynistic than the teaser suggested

Street Slang

Dear Editor:

Your editorials are usually well-reasoned and thoughtful opinions* on a variety of issues, both local and national, and I enjoy reading them. However, my joy dissipates every time I read the phrase "not for nothing," which seems to be happening more and more frequently. It is so jarring that it causes me to wince every time it assaults my eyes.

It an otherwise literate piece of writing, this insertion of street slang of dubious meaning has no place. I beg you in the name of all the nuns who labored to teach me proper English, please cease and desist.

What is this magical thing I didn't know about until now!

Keyshia Cole & Nicki Minaj - dancing

Sunshine Days - grinning like fools

Dana and Raphael got me Queer Questions Straight Talk ("108 frank & provocative questions it's OK to ask your lesbian, gay or bisexual loved one") for Christmasukkah. Because they love me? God, the love-hate relationship I have with this book. Dana suggested I end LiveJournal entries with a question each, so here you go, Dana, this one's for you. Remember!!! These are questions that are supposed to be OK for straight people to ask queer people because they care.

Area UFO support group offers place to share questions, experiences

Mom: Did you see the paper today? Are you going to go?!

Made these sweet-potato latkes for dinner last night, received rave reviews. But use two eggs and 4 Tbsp flour or the pancakes won't stay together.

If you use Firefox, you might have Screengrab! installed. I use Opera, so I don't. But today I discovered FastStone Capture 5.3. It works with any browser: click it, and it opens as a floating toolbar. It's really fast and includes basic image editing.

Blueberry-Spinach or Blueberry-Beet Smoothies

3/4 cup frozen blueberries
7 oz tofu* (more or less 1/2 block) OR 7 oz plain Greek yogurt (1 small container)
1/2 cup any cow milk or cow-milk substitute
1/4 cup spinach OR 1/4 cup canned sliced beets
3 packets Sweet'N Low (about 1/4 cup sugar, or convert to another sweetener using this guide)

Blend. Serves you and two lovelies.

*I use Nasoya-brand Lite Firm. It blends fine, but if you prefer, silken tofu is made for this sort of thing.
